F-635 Autoclavable pH Sensor

The F-635 style can be used in either benchtop or production vessels and is available in a variety of lengths. Steam sterilizable and autoclavable.

Steam sterilized in-situ in steel bioreactors and fermentation tanks with 25 mm entry ports.

Autoclaved with bellows assemblies for aseptic insertion into single-use bioprocess containers (BPCs).

Autoclaved with benchtop vessels. Sensor lengths available for vessel sizes from 1 liter to 20 liters.

This is the standard Broadley-James metric FermProbe connector. This FermProbe style has been used as a standard for years. It is designed to be used in bioprocess applications where CIP/SIP procedures are used. The F-635 Autoclavable pH sensor will withstand multiple autoclaving or sterilisation cycles, however, an autoclave cap should be used when autoclaving the sensor .

Metric FermProbe F-635 autoclavable pH Sensor

This FermProbe autoclavable pH sensor style features a metric Pg13.5 threaded polymer cap that allows it to be used with European style sensor housings. Autoclavable as well as steam sterilizable, this style of pH FermProbe is the first choice for use with small autoclavable benchtop vessels. Available only in the disconnect cap style. Cables must be ordered separately (see the Accessories tab for compatible cables).

Sensor Housings

The F-635 pH Sensor has a metric Pg13.5 threaded polymer cap allowing it to be used with European style housings. We would recommend the following Broadley-James sensor housings for use with the Model F-635 FermProbe^{^{^®}} steam sterilizable and autoclavable pH sensor:

Choose Sensor Model

If the sensor needs to fit an existing cable, check cable connector. If it has a male connector, an F-635 or F-835 FermProbe is required. Another guideline is to note the connector’s color. If the cable connector is black, use the F-635 or F-835 Fermprobe.

Benchtop Applications

The sensor length is from the base of the cap to the tip of the sensor (the glass part of the sensor).

SIP Tank Applications

If you have already chosen a sensor housing, select a sensor length with the same Class designation as the housing. The housing ordering information box also lists the correct sensor length to order. If you have not already chosen the housing, please review the recommendations next to each sensor model below.

FAQs

How Should FermProbes Be Stored?

Never store a pH sensor dry. The first choice for storing FermProbes is KCl solution. We recommend any concentration between 2.0 M and 3.8 M. Another good choice is buffer solution. A pH 4 buffer solution is best since it will keep longer, but pH 7 is also acceptable. If it is necessary to clean a FermProbe with acid, caustic, solvent or other cleaning solution, it is best to soak the sensor in KCl solution after cleaning and prior to use or calibration. This will re-condition the bulb and reference, extending the sensor life and improving calibration accuracy.

What's inside a FermProbe?

The gel in a FermProbe^® is a non-toxic, USP grade, organic material. Other manufacturers may use different materials such as polyacrylamide. Please call us for more information or an MSDS.

What is a pH Sensors Life Expectancy?

How long should a sensor last in storage?

Fermprobes can be stored for up to one year from date of shipment with no appreciable change in their performance or expected service life. After a year, the sensors are still good but their potential for optimum performance slowly erodes until they finally become totally non-functional. This would usually take many years of storage. Most customers try to rotate stock so sensors are put into service prior to one year from shipment, and this would be our strong recommendation for most customers.

How long should a sensor last in actual service?

Fermprobe pH sensors exhibit a fairly predictable "lifetime vs. temperature" performance ratio. The higher the temperature, the shorter the life; and, the longer the duration of exposure to elevated temperature, the shorter the life. Maximum temperature advisable is 135°C.

For example:

A Fermprobe may last 40 sterilization cycles at 121°C for 30minutes. (20 hours at 121°C)
A Fermprobe may last 20 sterilization cycles at 121°C for 60minutes. (20 hours at 121°C)
A Fermprobe may last 20 sterilization cycles at 135°C for 30minutes. (10 hours at 135°C)
A Fermprobe may last 10 sterilization cycles at 135°C for 60minutes. (10 hours at 135°C)

The actual service life attained will depend upon all other considerations, such as whether or not there is a CIP cycle (strong, hot caustics can dissolve the glass and the ceramic), whether or not the sensor is exposed to high pressure or fast flow rates, whether or not there are abrasives in the sample, etc.. Since there are so many variables and factors involved in determining sensor life, an operator can best determine the life for his particular vessel and set of conditions experimentally. By careful recording of when the sensors are installed and a statistical analysis of typical life, one can determine the optimum number of cycles.

There is a normal variance in sensor life and most operators of production vessels will search out a number, perhaps 10 cycles, that gives them a maximum confidence in the ability to run a cycle without failure. It is a helpful exercise to take the cost of the sensor and divide it by the number of cycles, then look at this "cost per cycle" to see if it is justifiable for a particular product.
